Houston Rockets Basketball Facts
- The Houston Rockets were established in 1967 as an expansion team in the NBA. The team was originally located in San Diego, California, and known as the San Diego Rockets before relocating to Houston, Texas, in 1971.
- The Rockets won their first NBA championship in 1994. Led by Hakeem Olajuwon and coached by Rudy Tomjanovich, they defeated the New York Knicks in a thrilling seven-game series.
- The Rockets repeated their championship success the following year, winning their second NBA title in 1995. They defeated the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals, once again led by Hakeem Olajuwon’s dominant play.
- The Rockets have had a strong association with international players. Hakeem Olajuwon, who hails from Nigeria, is considered one of the greatest centers in NBA history. Yao Ming, a Chinese basketball icon, played for the Rockets and had a significant impact on growing the sport’s popularity in China.
- In the 1983 NBA Draft, the Rockets selected Ralph Sampson with the first overall pick. Sampson formed a formidable “Twin Towers” frontcourt alongside Hakeem Olajuwon, making the Rockets a prominent team in the 1980s.
