Charlotte Hornets Basketball Facts
- The Charlotte Hornets were established as an expansion franchise in 1988 and began playing in the NBA in the 1988-1989 season. They were the first major professional sports team to be located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- The team’s original owner, George Shinn, named the franchise the Hornets as a tribute to the city’s rich history during the American Revolution, when British General Charles Cornwallis referred to Charlotte as a “hornet’s nest of rebellion.”
- The Hornets had immediate success in their inaugural season, finishing with a record of 20 wins and 62 losses. Despite the tough start, the team drew strong fan support, averaging over 23,000 fans per game.
- In 1991, the Hornets drafted Larry Johnson with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft. Johnson quickly became a fan favorite and won the NBA Rookie of the Year award that season.
- The Hornets made their first playoff appearance in the 1992-1993 season, led by players like Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, and Muggsy Bogues. They advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals before being eliminated.
- Muggsy Bogues, who played for the Hornets from 1988 to 1997, was one of the shortest players in NBA history, standing at just 5 feet 3 inches tall. He became known for his exceptional speed and defensive skills.
- The Hornets temporarily relocated to New Orleans due to damage caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. They played as the New Orleans Hornets from 2002 to 2013 before reclaiming the Charlotte Hornets name.
- The team’s colors are teal, purple, and white, which have become iconic for the franchise. The Hornets’ original teal uniforms in the 1990s were particularly popular and have since been reintroduced as part of the team’s retro branding.
- The Charlotte Hornets returned to Charlotte in 2004 and played their home games at the Spectrum Center, which is located in Uptown Charlotte. The arena has hosted NBA games, concerts, and other major events.
- In recent years, the Hornets have seen the emergence of young talents such as Kemba Walker and LaMelo Ball. LaMelo Ball, who was drafted by the Hornets in 2020, won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in the 2020-2021 season.
