Atlanta Hawks Basketball Facts
- The Atlanta Hawks were founded in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, based in Moline, Illinois. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1951 and eventually settled in Atlanta in 1968.
- The team changed its name from the Milwaukee Hawks to the St. Louis Hawks when they relocated in 1955. It wasn’t until they moved to Atlanta that they became known as the Atlanta Hawks.
- The Atlanta Hawks won their only NBA Championship in 1958 when they were still based in St. Louis. Led by coach Alex Hannum and star player Bob Pettit, they defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.
- Dominique Wilkins, nicknamed “The Human Highlight Film,” is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Atlanta Hawks history. He played for the team from 1982 to 1994 and was known for his incredible athleticism and scoring ability.
- In the 1987 Slam Dunk Contest, held during the NBA All-Star Weekend, Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan engaged in an epic showdown. Although Jordan ultimately won the contest, Wilkins’ performance, including his iconic windmill dunk, is still remembered as one of the greatest in NBA history.
- Pete Maravich, one of the most skilled and innovative players in basketball history, played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1970 to 1974. Known for his flashy style of play and exceptional ball-handling, Maravich left a lasting impact on the game.
- The Atlanta Hawks have retired several jersey numbers, including #9 for Bob Pettit, #21 for Dominique Wilkins, #23 for Lou Hudson, and #55 for Dikembe Mutombo. These players made significant contributions to the franchise during their careers.
- In the 2014-2015 NBA season, the Atlanta Hawks achieved their best regular-season record in franchise history with 60 wins and 22 losses. Coached by Mike Budenholzer, they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals but ultimately fell short of reaching the NBA Finals.
- The Atlanta Hawks have had several notable rivalries throughout their history, including intense matchups with the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons during the 1980s and 1990s.
- The Atlanta Hawks currently play their home games at the State Farm Arena, which is located in downtown Atlanta. The arena underwent significant renovations in 2018, enhancing the fan experience and modernizing the facilities.
