Golden State Warriors Basketball Facts
- The Golden State Warriors were founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors and were one of the original teams in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA.
- The Warriors relocated to San Francisco in 1962 and became known as the San Francisco Warriors. In 1971, the team changed its name to the Golden State Warriors to represent the entire state of California.
- The Warriors experienced their first period of success in the 1970s. Led by players like Rick Barry and Jamaal Wilkes, they won their first NBA championship in the 1974-1975 season, defeating the Washington Bullets in the NBA Finals.
- The Warriors went through a long playoff drought after their 1975 championship, but they experienced a resurgence in the 2000s. Coached by Don Nelson and led by players like Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson, and Monta Ellis, the Warriors made the playoffs in 2007 and had a memorable upset of the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round.
- The “We Believe” era, as it became known, was marked by the Warriors’ underdog status and their electrifying style of play. They created a raucous home-court atmosphere at Oracle Arena and captured the hearts of fans.
- In recent years, the Warriors have become one of the most dominant teams in the NBA, led by their core players Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. They won three NBA championships in a span of four years (2015, 2017, and 2018).
- The Warriors have set multiple NBA records during their recent success. Stephen Curry holds the record for the most three-pointers made in a single season, and the team holds the record for the most wins in a regular season with 73 wins in the 2015-2016 season.
- The team’s home arena is the Chase Center, located in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco. The state-of-the-art arena opened in 2019 and replaced Oracle Arena as the team’s primary home venue.
- The Warriors have a strong and passionate fanbase known as the “Dub Nation.” The fans are known for their unwavering support and their distinctive traditions, including the “Roaracle” chant that was popularized during the team’s successful years.
